So, why don't we just not do it, see if people really do depend on their wall clocks to be accurate and then make a decision (or not) later to turn the synching back on later.

Apart from how my microwave clock will work, this scares me; the reason it's hard to synchronize power frequencies over large distances is because the wavelength of 60Hz is about 5000km, and power needs to be able to flow both ways on a transmission line. So when you get to a few hundred km or so, it becomes a LOT harder to transmit power.
I predict this one is going to be a disaster.....it's just basic physics.
